Movie Appearances

Brief summaries of his role and the links to his brand from Chapter 2

Tarpon - 1973

Character: Soundtrack

This was Jimmy’s first brush with the big screen, but only his music appeared in the 1973 documentary movie. Jimmy composed and performed the original instrumental soundtrack. Creating and performing instrumental music was rare for him, but his Key West author buddies, Richard Brautigan, Thomas McGuane, and Jim Harrison, starred in the movie. The movie captures the essence of fly fishing in the Keys, so it was a perfect fit for JImmy as his brand was developing in the Florida sun surrounded by authors, fly fisherman, and plenty of fun accelerants.

Rancho Deluxe - 1975

Character: Himself

The script for this film was written by Jimmy’s Key West buddy, famous author and future brother-in-law, Thomas McGuane. Jimmy wrote and recorded the music for the movie’s soundtrack. Jeff Bridges and Sam Waterston starred in the film, but it was also Jimmy’s big screen debut when he performed “Livingston Saturday Night” in a bar. The 1975 neo-Western comedy film revolved around two cattle rustlers in modern-day Livingston, Montana, who plague a wealthy ranch owner.

Based on the movie’s storyline and setting in Montana, the music was much more country than the Trop Rock style of Jimmy’s last three records, but it showed his versatility as a songwriter. Two of the songs were revised and re-recorded for two of Jimmy’s later albums. While this movie exposed him to new audiences and opened the door to the movie business, it was not tied well to his evolving brand.

FM - 1978

Character: Himself

Jimmy’s feature film debut, in a movie that was actually seen by large audiences, was in the 1978 film FM. Jimmy played himself performing his song "Livingston Saturday Night" during a live concert sequence, so it was a simple way to ease into acting. This performance aligned seamlessly with his burgeoning brand only a year after Margaritaville was released. FM revolves around a group of rebellious radio DJs at a Los Angeles station who resist corporate pressures to commercialize their programming. Jimmy's Involvement not only showcased his musical talents to a broad audience, it linked his image to the movie's theme of resistance to conformity as his brand was forming.

The film's soundtrack achieved significant success, earning Platinum certification, also featuring tracks from other stars such as Tom Petty, Steely Dan, Queen, and Bob Seger. Having his song contribution connected with all these acclaimed artists helped solidify his place in the mainstream music landscape of the late 1970s. This is a 3 minute clip from the movie, including Jimmy’s performance of “Livingston Saturday Night”.

Repo Man - 1984

Character: Additional Bond Agent

In the 1984 cult classic Repo Man, Jimmy made a brief cameo appearance as an "Additional Blond Agent," portraying a CIA operative. This role is fleeting, with Jimmy seen in a blue car, wearing aviator sunglasses, and yelling at a girl. His involvement stemmed from his friendship with producer Michael Nesmith, of Monkees fame, who invited him to the set, leading to his spontaneous inclusion in the film. This cameo aligns with Buffett's penchant for embracing quirky, offbeat projects, reinforcing place in popular culture. While you need to be looking for him to see him, he knows that these offbeat cameos appeal to his hard core fan base and continue to build his image.

Hook - 1991

Character: Pirate

In Steven Spielberg's 1991 film Hook, Jimmy Buffett made a brief cameo as a pirate attempting to steal Peter Pan's shoes. His appearance is a "blink-and-you'll-miss-it" moment, but it does align with his laid-back, adventurous persona and reinforces his brand as a multifaceted entertainer. From a brand perspective, this is an example of how well his persona was becoming embedded in the culture when a relatively successful (tongue in cheek) producer like Steven Spielberg thinks of Jimmy for this role.

Cobb - 1994

Character: Armless guy/Heckler

This film is Ty Cobb’s official, authorized 'autobiography'. Jimmy appeared ever-so-briefly as “The Armless Guy,” a character based on an ugly, real-life incident in which Cobb went into the stands and punched and kicked a heckler. Living up to his brand, after filming his scene that day, he entertained a few hundred movie extras with a 45-minute-or-so set that he performed from the back of a flatbed trailer parked along the third-base line. No cameras, no press, just Jimmy being authentic Jimmy for the extras, not the stars.

Congo - 1995

Character: 727 Pilot

In the 1995 adventure film Congo, Jimmy Buffett made a brief appearance as the pilot of a Boeing 727 aircraft. While his role was minor, it was notable enough to earn him a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) card, as he delivered a few lines during his scene. Interestingly,on the DVD version of the movie the chapter featuring this scene is titled "Jimmy's Flight," suggesting that perhaps someone on the production crew was of a Parrot Head since his role was so minor. While the role was not really directly on brand he did play a pilot which was a tiny piece of his lifestyle brand.

Music for Montserrat - 1997

Character: Himself

Music for Montserrat is primarily a concert film capturing the benefit concert held on September 15, 1997, at London's Royal Albert Hall. Organized by Sir George Martin, the event aimed to raise funds for the Caribbean island of Montserrat following the devastating eruption of the Soufrière Hills volcano. In addition to Jimmy the concert featured performances by renowned artists such as Paul McCartney, Elton John, Eric Clapton, and Sting. Another example of Jimmy being lumped in with the music greats despite minimal play on the radio.

Jimmy Buffett's role in the concert was both significant and symbolic. He performed his song "Volcano," which he originally recorded in 1979 at AIR Studios in Montserrat. The song's lyrics, referencing the unpredictability of volcanic eruptions, resonated deeply with the event's cause. His involvement in Music for Montserrat aligns with his brand as an artist deeply connected to island life and communities. By contributing to the relief efforts through his performance, Buffett demonstrated the values of solidarity and support that are integral to his brand.

Hoot - 2006

Character: Mr. Ryan

In the 2006 family film Hoot, Jimmy played a multifaceted role that significantly bolstered his brand as an advocate for environmental causes and a promoter of the laid-back, tropical lifestyle. His role as Mr. Ryan, a science teacher who supports the kids in their mission to protect a colony of endangered burrowing owls from a construction project. While his screen time was limited, the role was very on brand because it aligned with his real-life advocacy and reinforced his image as a champion of ecological causes. Having the movie set in Florida was another subconscious link to his lifestyle brand.

Jimmy was also deeply involved in the film's music. He composed and performed several tracks for the Hoot soundtrack which was distributed by his label, Mailboat Records, cross-marketing another one of his businesses.

Jimmy also served as a co-producer for Hoot. With Hoot having a family focus this fit in well with his conscious effort to expose the younger generations to his lifestyle brand. This is a triple win from a marketing perspective because the movie reaches both kids and their parents with a positive message about him and his brand, and he made money doing it.

Sun Dogs - 2006

In the 2006 documentary film Sun Dogs, Jimmy was a producer for the film and appeared briefly as himself in some of the DVD bonus footage. Sun Dogs is a story about twelve dogs rescued from the streets and animal shelters of Kingston, Jamaica, that are trained to be the stars of Jamaica’s first dog sled racing team. The story connects Jimmy to his dog lover persona, which is part of his brand. Shortly before Jimmy passed away he made a promo video for pet adoption for the ASPCA using his “Like My Dog” song. The song and the promo video were fitting legacies showcasing Jimmy’s love of dogs.

See Jimmy a bit out of this stereotype persona, mushing through the snow (20 seconds).

Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson - 2008

Character: Himself

Jimmy was interviewed briefly in the movie because he and Hunter were good friends. Jimmy refers to letting Hunter use his boat and he left his phone on, and Hunter rang up a $9,000 bill. Per his brand MO, he laughs when he talks about it, rather than being upset.

Jurassic World Cameo 2015 - 1.6 Billion viewers

Character: Jim Buktu

While Jimmy’s appearance as a bartender in the 2015 blockbuster movie Jurassic World was brief, it was exactly on brand. As the dinosaurs are attacking the park visitors in the village area, Jimmy is shown running through the crowd carrying two margaritas, attempting to whisk them to safety. True to Jimmy’s brand amongst all the havoc and dinosaurs terrorizing civilians, he seems to be prioritizing the safety of the margaritas over his own safety.

Jimmy was even given an official character name, Jim Buktu and was a bartender at the Margaritaville restaurant which was a part of the village scenes, complete with two bright neon yellow Landshark Lager signs in the windows. Not exactly a full blown commercial, but being featured this way makes it more organic and makes it feel like Margaritaville is part of pop culture almost 40 years after the song came out. Oh, and by the way it is estimated that over 1.6 Billion, that’s billion with a B, have seen the movie.

This appearance of Jimmy and the Margaritaville restaurant were a result of Jimmy’s friendship with the one of the movie’s Producer, Frank Marshall. To make it a true cross-marketing promotion Margaritaville Restaurants had limited time menu items promoting Jurassic World featuring Jurassic treats like an “Indominus Rex Burger”. As with many things Jimmy, the cameo turned into a legendary Internet phenomenon known as “Margarita Man”. People even dressed as Jim Buktu, “Margarita Man” at Comic-Con in 2015.

The real story behind Jimmy's heroic margarita rescue in Jurassic World (2 minutes).

The Parrot Head Documentary - 2017

Character: Himself

This 2017 documentary delves into the vibrant fan culture surrounding Jimmy’s music.

Jimmy appears in the documentary through exclusive interviews, offering personal insights into the origins and growth of the Parrot Head community. It is very clear how much he sincerely appreciates this segment of the fanbase and its impact on his career and brand. Needless to say this is 100% on brand for Jimmy’s most devoted fans. This is another piece of marketing genius which reached his core audience with no hard costs. In fact, since it was distributed by his record label, Mailboat Records, it was likely turned a profit.

The Story Behind Buried Treasure - 2017

Character: Himself

In the 2017 project Jimmy Buffett: Buried Treasure, Buffett played a central role in both the musical and narrative aspects of the release. The project unearthed a collection of acoustic songs he wrote and recorded in the late 1960s, which had been lost for decades. To complement the album, a deluxe edition was released, featuring a 40-page collector's book with never-before-seen photos and a 20-minute documentary directed by Jimmy’s, Delaney Buffett. This project reinforced Buffett's brand by highlighting his roots in storytelling. Combining these old recordings with a collectors book and a documentary provide more evidence of Jimmy’s ever present marketing mindset.

Billionaire Boys Club - 2018

Character: Police Captain

Another short cameo as a Police Captain, not a very Jimmy like role. The film did not do well financially. The film is based on the true story of a group of wealthy young men in Los Angeles during the early 1980s. The Billionaire Boys Club was essentially a Ponzi scheme that attracted investors by flaunting their wealth and promising lucrative returns. On the upside it likely did expose Jimmy to new people given the very plot was intense and not related to his brand at all.

Up the Stairs - 2018

Character: Principal Anderson

This was a short film was produced by Jimmy’s daughter Delaney Buffett. The short film was not seen by many people, but his support for his daughter’s project showcases the importance of family as one of Jimmy’s core values and underpinnings of his brand.

The Beach Bum - 2019

Character: Himself

The 2019 movie features some major stars like Matthew McConaughey, Martin Lawrence, Snoop Dogg, and Isla Fisher. Jimmy had a very small part playing himself, but getting paid to expose your brand to audiences is a luxury that few people ever experience.

Jimmy Carter: Rock & Roll President - 2020

Character: Himself

Jimmy’s involvement in this 2020 documentary highlighted his personal connection with President Carter. The film explores how Carter leveraged his relationships with musicians to bolster his political campaigns. In the documentary, Jimmy recounts performing an acoustic set at a 1976 campaign rally in Portland, Oregon which drew approximately 15,000 attendees. Even though this was pre-Margaritaville Jimmy was included with other superstars of the time including Bob Dylan, the Allman Brothers, and Wilie Nelson.

Under the Volcano - 2021

Character: Himself

Jimmy's appearance in the 2021 documentary Under the Volcano reinforced his brand by highlighting his connection to the legendary AIR Montserrat recording studio. The film chronicles the history of this iconic studio, built by legendary Beatles producer George Martin in 1979. George’s main mission with AIR was to create a creative environment that fostered collaboration in a relaxed setting. It was a totally different setting than the typical studios in London that were very clock driven. It was where everyone wanted to record, including music legends like The Police, Elton John, and Dire Straits. It was the perfect vibe for Jimmy and the Coral Reefers.

Buffett's involvement in the documentary underscores his place among these musical greats and emphasizes his affinity for tropical locales, aligning with his laid-back, island-inspired persona. By sharing his experiences at AIR Montserrat, Jimmy reinforces the authenticity of his "island escapism" brand, connecting his music to a real-life paradise that inspired many artists.

The documentary's release introduced Buffett's story to new audiences, further cementing his image as a musician deeply connected to tropical vibes and legendary music history. This exposure not only honors his past contributions but also strengthens the enduring appeal of his Margaritaville lifestyle brand.

JazzFest: A New Orleans Story - 2022

Character: Himself

The film is a documentary about the annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival which premiered at South by Southwest in 2022 and won a Grammy for the Best Music Films that year. Jimmy is a key figure in the movie and his link to New Orleans is an important part of his brand.

Character: Himself
